Larry McCray

Back in 1991, Larry McCray looked poised to rule the blues world following the release of his outstanding Atlantic Records debut CD “Ambition.” His second and final major label release, “Delta Hurricane,” contains the first official recording of Warren Haynes’ “Soul Shine,” one that’s every bit as stirring as the Allman Brothers Band versions that would follow as well as any sung by Haynes himself. In addition to potent originals such as “Me and My Baby” and “Secret Lover,” McCray’s other memorable recordings include funky version of the Rolling Stones’ “Midnight Rambler” and a reworking of “All Along the Watchtower” that deftly splits the difference between the Dylan original and the famed Jimi Hendrix cover. Regardless of what he’s playing, though, McCray makes an impression. He’s that rare blues man whose immense guitar skills are matched by his emotive vocals.
